Vital events, 2021


In 2021, there were 62 180 live births and 136 622 deaths in the Republic of Serbia. Natural increase  amounted to  -74 442.

Оf the total number of live births in 2021 in the Republic of Serbia, the largest was the number of live births, 18 825, were born to women aged 30-34. The average age at child birth was 30.1, while the average age of women at birth of the first child was 28.7 years.

According to birth order, the largest number was in first order live births (28 346 or 45.6%) and second order live births (21 703 or 34.9%). Observed by women’s age, most of first-born children (9 669 or 34,1%) were born to women aged 25-29 years, while the largest number of second-born children (7 567 or 34.9%) were born to women aged 30-34 years.

Most of the children were born in July, September, October and November.

Based on data for 2021 there were 136 622 deaths (51.2% of men and 48.8% of women) recorded in the Republic of Serbia. The average age at death was 75.2 years. The leading cause of death in both sexes was diseases of the circulatory  system, which took 56 610 lives (41.4% оf the total number of deaths). The second cause was diseases that can be connected to COVID-19, which took 27 742 persons (20.3% of the total number of deaths), while at the third place are neoplasms of which in 2021 there were 20 609 deaths (15.1% of the total number of deaths). 

Most of persons died in March, April, October and November.
