New Law on Official Statistics

The new Law on Official Statistics, adopted by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia on December 3rd, 2025, enters into force today. The new Law on Official Statistics continues to improve the quality, reliability and accessibility of statistical data, aligns it with European standards, strengthens the professional independence of the institution, and ensures a high level of confidential information protection.

The key innovations brought by the new law are:

  • clearly defining the role of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia as the main producer, disseminator and coordinator of the official statistics system;
  • strengthening the coordination role of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia through the work of the Statistical Council – whose composition and work includes representatives of various categories of users, and the National Coordination Committee for Official Statistics – which brings together representatives of responsible producers of official statistics;
  • more significant use of administrative data sources, thus ensuring higher quality and reliability of data, with simultaneous reducing the burden on reporting units and collection costs;
  • the right to obtain data from other legal entities, while respecting established standards for the protection of confidential information;
  • strengthening data confidentiality protection measures, including secure processing and storage of data, as well as clearly prescribed sanctions in case of a confidentiality breach.

By adopting this law, the legal framework of the official statistics in the Republic of Serbia is harmonized with the acquis communautaire of the European Union and the standards of the European Statistical System, thereby making a significant contribution to the process of European integration of the Republic of Serbia.

In addition to the Law on Official Statistics, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia adopted the five-year Official Statistics Program 2026–2030 at the same session.
