Water use and protection against pollution, 2022


In 2022, 3 200 million m3 of water was used in the industry sections, presenting the decrease of 14.2%, compared to 2021.

From a total of 3 200 million m3 of water abstracted in the industry sections, 99.4% included water from own abstraction (98.0% surface water, 1.4% groundwater), and 0.6% from public water supply system.

Water used for industry purposes, observed by sections and in relation to the previous year, recorded the following trend in 2022: Mining and quarrying –21.1% increase; Manufacturing – 5.9% decrease; Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply – 14.6% decrease.

Out of total water used for industry purposes, 96.8% included water used for Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, 2.5% for Manufacturing and 0.7% for Mining and quarrying.

From a total quantity of 118 million m3 of wastewater1in industry, 47.5% included water from the section Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, 33.9% from Manufacturing section and 18.6% from the section of Mining and quarrying.

In 2022, a total of 30 million m3 water was purified, of which 63.3% by primary treatment, 20.0% by secondary treatment and 16.7% by tertiary treatment. The largest share of purified water in the industry section was that of the division Manufacture of basic metals, 18.7%, followed by Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products, 14.5%, Manufacture of food products, 12.4%, and Manufacture of paper and paper products with 11.4%. The share of purified water in all the remaining divisions of the industry section was 43.1%.
