Total transport of passengers and goods, 2020 and 2021


The total number of transported passengers in 2021, relative to the previous year, increased by 55.7%, relative to the same period of the previous year. In the observed period, domestic transport of passengers saw also an increase of 9.9%, which influenced the growth of the total number of passengers carried by 11.8%. The total performance in 2021, expressed in pkm, increased by 29.2%, which resulted from an increase in the performance of the domestic transport of passengers by 8.0%, and that of the international transport grew by 63.2%.

The volume of transported goods in 2021, relative to the previous year, increased by 40.8%. The domestic transport of goods increased by 64.8%, while the international transport of goods recorded inecrease of export of goods by 25.1%, and of import by 21.6%, relative to 2020. Operations volume, expressed in tkm grew by 32.7%.

Observed by mode of transport, the total number of passengers carried in road transport increased, relative to the previous year, by 10.7%, which was influenced by the transport of passengers in domestic transport, which grew by 10.3% in 2021, while the number of passengers in international transport went up by 30.7%. The total performance in road transport increased by 16.2%, which indicates a higher average travelled journey in the reference period. The total volume of goods carried in road transport in 2021 was higher than it was in 2020 by 50.0%, while the volume of performance in tkm went up by 30.6%.

The total number of passenger carried in railway transport recorded an increase of 6.6%, compared with the previous year. The realised performance, expressed in passenger kilometres, wend up by 21.7%. The volume of goods carried grew both in domestic and international transport so that the total goods carried in railway transport increased by 2.7%. The volume of operations in tkm in railway transport grew by 6.5%.

Crude oil pipeline transport saw an increase of 9.4%. In the same period, natural gas pipeline transport went up by 13.5%. The volume of operations, in tkm, was up by 6.2% as far as crude oil transport is concerned.

Air transport, as far as passengers carried and total operations volume are concerned, indicates growth. Transported passengers’ number, compared to the previous year, increased by 75.3%, and total operations volume by 63.3%. When we observe goods transport by air, increase is also noticeable. Namely, in 2021, when compared to 2020, we can notice a growth of quantities of goods transported of 12.0%, and a growth of total operations volume, of 9.1%. 

Inland waterways transport recorded an increase both in the quantities of goods carried  and operations volume. The increase was partly a result of the increase in the number of reporting units. Quantities of goods carried increased by 311.8%, and the index of operation volume, expressed in tkm, by 337.5%.

The border traffic of road passenger vehicles coming into Serbia increased by 46.3% in 2021 if compared to 2020. The number of vehicles with national registration plates inecreased by 50.5%, while the number of vehicles with foreign registration plates grew by 43.6%. The number of freight vehicles which entered the national territory, increased by 14.9%, and of those which exited by 9.9%.

In telecommunications, the initial communication in mobile telephony increased by 1.3%, while in fixed telephony the realized minutes decreased by 17.9%, relative to the previous year. Classic mailing, i.e. postal services in 2021, compared to 2020, noted the following movements: payment operations decreased by 5.9%, and parcels increased by 6.9%.

The total number of employees increased by 0.3% in relation to the previous year.
