Water use and protection against water pollution, 2021 - Previous results

In 2021, 3 723 million m3 of water was used in the industry sections, presenting the decrease of 6.4%, compared to 2020.

From a total of 3 723 million m3 of water abstracted in the industry sections, 99.6% included water from own abstraction (98.6% surface water, 1.0% groundwater), and 0.4% from public water supply system.

Water used for industry purposes, observed by sections and in relation to the previous year, recorded the following trend in 2021: Mining and quarrying –11.3%increase; Manufacturing – 5.8%decrease; Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply – 6.5% decrease.

Out of total water used for industry purposes, 97.4% included water used for Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, 2.1% for Manufacturing and 0.5% for Mining and quarrying.

From a total quantity of 101 million m3 of wastewater[1]in industry, 49.2% included water from the section Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, 37.0% from Manufacturing section and 13.8% from the section of Mining and quarrying.

In 2021, a total of 29 million m3 water was purified, of which 61.2% by primary treatment, 19.0% by secondary treatment and 19.7% by tertiary treatment. The largest share of purified water in the industry section was that of the division Manufacture of basic metals, 18.9%, followed by Manufacture of food products with 16.3%, Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products, 14.4%, and Manufacture of paper and paper products with 9.5%. The share of purified water in all the remaining divisions of the industry section was 40.9%.
