Internal migration

Internal population migrations present annual survey that covers basic demographic data on persons who moved from the actual place of usual residence to another place of residence within the boundaries of the Republic of Serbia. For collecting the data on persons who changed the place of residence, the competent body is Ministry of the Interior. SORS does not conduct the survey on international migrations. 

Immigration of foreign citizens is an annual survey that includes demographic data on persons – foreign citizens who have been issued a permanent residence permit or temporary residence permit for a period longer than one year. The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for collecting data on persons who have been issued a temporary residence permit or permanent residence permit.

30. January 2026. Immigration and emigration of foreign nationals, 2023

The number of foreign nationals who immigrated in the Republic of Serbia in 2023 was 41 273, by 19.2% greater than in the previous year, and the number of foreign nationals who emigrated amounted to 15 443, up by 66.9%.

The largest number of foreign nationals who immigrated in 2023 have the citizenship of the Russian Federation – in total 22 937 persons, accounting for 55.6% of the total immigration of foreign nationals. On the other hand, the largest number of foreign nationals who emigrated in 2023 were from the People’s Republic of China – 5 978, i.e. 38.7% of total emigration of foreign nationals.
