World Statistics Day – 20 October 2025

“Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone” is the slogan of this year’s, fourth World Statistics Day.

In order to raise awareness of the importance and role of official statistics in modern society, the United Nations General Assembly established 20 October as World Statistics Day in 2010. Since then, every five years, statistical institutions, universities and international organizations around the world have organized numerous activities on this day – campaigns, lectures, workshops and public events – to highlight the key role of statistics in decision-making, public policies development and citizens’ life quality improvement.

World Statistics Day 2025 is celebrated under a slogan that highlights the importance of accessible, reliable and transparent data as a driver of positive change in society. In the era of digital transformation, the importance of quality statistical data is increasing, as they provide the foundation for planning sustainable development, assessing the effects of public policies and supporting decision-makers at all levels.

In line with these values, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, within the EU4SORS project - Development of modern statistical system, implemented with the support of the European Union, is actively working to strengthen the capacity of the national statistical system, improve the data quality and increase the accessibility to users. The result of this project will be the establishment of a modern statistical system, which enables faster and better decision-making in state administration, providing support to local governments, better understanding of the labour market and access to up-to-date and reliable data for all stakeholders, including the Government and ministries, local governments, the National Employment Service, investors and employers, the academic community, the media and citizens.

A particularly important segment of SORS activities relates to monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in accordance with the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Serbia is among the countries that are continuously improving the system for monitoring the sustainable development goals, applying internationally comparable methodologies and strengthening cooperation with institutions that produce relevant data. Improving sustainable development statistics is one of the priorities of the EU4SORS project, which aims to provide better and more accessible data that support the creation of policies aimed at social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Through cooperation with institutions, the academic community and international partners, SORS strives to ensure that statistical data is reliable, timely and understandable to all, in order to serve as a basis for creating evidence-based policies.

On the occasion of World Statistics Day, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia traditionally publishes the brochure "Serbia in Figures", which presents the most important data on demography, economy, society and environment in a concise and visually attractive way.
