Primary education

Statistics of primary education collects data on regular primary education: number of base schools and detached units, number of classes, ethnic language, pupils by sex, age and classes, foreign language learning, completion rate, drop out rate, regular schools inclusion, teaching staff. Moreover, collected are the data on primary education in special schools/ classes and lower arts education.  

Information

As of the end of the 2022/2023 and the beginning of the 2023/2024 school year, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia uses data from the register of the Unified Education Information System - JISP. The data for the end of the year represent the situation on the day of August 16, and for the beginning the situation on the day of November 28, 2023. All changes in the JISP database after the mentioned dates are not included in the data published by the Statistical Office.

02. February 2024. Primary education - beginning of 2023/2024 school year and end of 2022/2023 school year, 2023

According to data from the beginning of the 2023/24 school year in the Republic of Serbia, a total of 508 751 students attended primary education: 500 514 in regular schools, 3,179 in special schools and 5,058 in adult education schools.

The first cycle of regular primary education (grades 1 - 4) was attended by 250 399 students, while the second cycle (grades 5 - 8) was attended by 250 115 students. In this school year, 62 516 first-year students were enrolled in regular schools.

At the end of the 2022/23 school year in the Republic of Serbia, a total of 503 918 regular students attended classes. A total of 62 683 students completed the first cycle of primary education (4th grade), while 62 685 students completed the complete primary school (8th grade).
