Human resources in science and technology, 2018


According to the results of the Labor Force Survey (LFS) in 2018, there were 972 178 persons aged 15-74 in the Republic of Serbia who either have completed higher education or are employed in the fields of science and technology as experts, engineers, experts or technicians, of which 53% are women.

The core of human resources in science and technology consists of persons with higher education which are working in the fields of science and technology in these occupations, in 2018 there were 491,600, of which 57% were women.

The highest number of persons with completed first degree higher education - 62.3%. Among them, the largest is share of the youngest age group (15-24) - as much as 87.0%.

In the population aged 15-74, having completed higher education, the largest share is employed persons (69.3%), more than one fifth are unemployed (22.3%) and 8.4% are inactive. Persons with higher education in the age group 25-34 years constitute a quarter of the total number of highly educated persons.

The largest share of persons working as: experts, engineers, professional associates or technicians is in the education sector (18.4%), followed by Health and social protection (15.9%), Manufacturing and Professional, scientific, innovation and technological activities (10.7%).
